IELTS

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System — a globally recognized test used to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, immigration authorities, and employers in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, the USA.

Types of IELTS:

  • IELTS Academic: For students applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels abroad.
  • IELTS General Training: For immigration (PR, work visas) and non-academic training.

Test Format:

IELTS has four sections:

  • Listening – 30 minutes
  • Reading – 60 minutes
  • Writing – 60 minutes
  • Speaking – 11–14 minutes (in-person or online)

Total test duration: Approx. 2 hours 45 minutes

Band Score System:

Each section is scored from 0 to 9. The overall band score is the average of all four:

  • 9: Expert user
  • 8: Very good user
  • 7: Good user
  • 6: Competent user
  • 5: Modest user
  • Below 5: Limited or intermittent proficiency
  • Most universities require:

  • 6.0–6.5 for undergraduate programs
  • 6.5–7.0+ for postgraduate programs
  • Registration:

  • Book online through official IELTS websites (IDP or British Council)
  • Fee in India: ₹16,250 (subject to change)
  • Choose between Computer-delivered or Paper-based test
  • Test Availability:

  • Conducted multiple times every month
  • Results available in 3–5 days (computer-based) or 13 days (paper-based)
